Emergency Dental Visits Spike after St. Patrick’s Day

pint of green beer for St. Patrick's DaySt. Patrick’s Day is less than a week away, and there will probably be widespread celebration of Irish culture between now and March 17th. For many people, this will involve consuming excessive amounts of alcohol. While this may make for a fun day of revelry with friends, it’s important to be careful when drinking heavily. The risk of injury increases significantly, and this includes injuries to your teeth.

A study conduced by CNBC and Sikka Software found that emergency dental appointments are 77% higher on March 18th than on an average day. This surge in emergency dental treatment typically occurs for several days after St. Patrick’s Day. Both men and women are impacted somewhat equally by this trend – men experience a 78% increase in emergency dental appointments, while women report a 77.4% increase.

St. Patrick’s Day dental emergencies are even more prevalent in Texas than most states. The study found that Texas typically experiences a spike of over 100% compared to the emergency appointments on an average day.

As would be expected, alcohol is the driving force behind injured teeth on St. Patrick’s Day. In some instances, this is due to drunken bar fights. However, it is also common for people to simply fall down drunk and smack their face on the ground. This often results in a chipped or cracked tooth. In the case of a truly bad fall, teeth may even become dislodged.
